Objective
As part of the one-year Design Foundations program at Fanshawe College, I had the opportunity to collaborate with Lexus Dealership and fashion students for a fashion show at the Lexus Dealership called “Centuries in Motion.”
The show featured three categories: past, present, and future. Each outfit, made from recycled car parts, reflected its assigned time period. Design Foundations students were tasked with creating outfits for the future category.
Process
I used futuristic elements for my design, drawing inspiration from the luxury brand Lexus. To reflect its opulence, I incorporated shiny components like broken CDs and car accessories. I also integrated the Lexus logo onto the dress using cut-up car mats, shaping it onto the skirt.
A significant challenge arose as I lacked a fashion background, making it daunting to attach car parts to fabric effectively. The skirt proved particularly difficult, with glued car mat pieces continually falling off. To overcome this, I resorted to using a staple gun, ensuring stronger attachment. However, upon dressing the model, the Lexus logo wasn’t prominently displayed due to the dress’s flowy nature. To address this, I incorporated parts of a hula hoop to add structure to the skirt, enhancing visibility of the logo. Despite the challenges, I was delighted with the final outcome. At the fashion show, I was honoured to receive the ‘Best Representation of the Lexus Brand’ award, among three students.
